Wasn't lactate considered a waste product?
Historically, yes. For much of the 20th century, lactate was believed to be responsible for muscle fatigue, acidosis and reduced athletic performance. Modern physiology has fundamentally changed this understanding. Research led by Professor George A. Brooks at the University of California, Berkeley demonstrated that lactate is continuously produced and utilised under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Rather than being metabolic waste, lactate acts as a circulating energy source and signaling molecule¹²³.
What is the Lactate Shuttle?
The Lactate Shuttle Theory is one of the most important concepts in modern exercise physiology. Originally proposed by George Brooks in the 1980s, it describes how lactate moves between cells, tissues and organs to distribute energy throughout the body². Examples include:
- Muscles producing lactate during exercise.
- The heart using lactate as fuel.
- The brain consuming lactate during periods of increased demand.
- The liver converting lactate back into glucose.
Can muscles use lactate directly?
Yes. Modern research demonstrates that skeletal muscle both produces and consumes lactate continuously. Different muscle fibers exchange lactate as part of normal energy metabolism, helping optimise energy production during exercise.² In trained athletes, lactate utilisation capacity is often enhanced through adaptations in monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs), which facilitate lactate transport between tissues⁴.
Does the heart use lactate?
Yes. The heart is one of the most efficient lactate-consuming organs in the body. During exercise, lactate may become a preferred fuel source for cardiac tissue due to its rapid oxidative availability².
Can the brain use lactate?
Yes. Research has shown that lactate crosses the blood-brain barrier and can be utilised directly by neurons. Scientific studies suggest lactate contributes to:
- Brain energy metabolism
- Cognitive performance
- Learning processes
- Memory formation
- Neuroplasticity
Does lactate cause fatigue?
No. One of the largest misconceptions in sports science is the belief that lactate causes fatigue. Current evidence indicates lactate itself is not responsible for muscle burning sensations or exercise-induced fatigue. In fact, lactate production helps maintain energy generation during periods of high metabolic stress.² Today, many physiologists consider lactate part of the solution rather than the problem¹².
Is lactate only an energy source?
No. One of the most important discoveries of recent decades is that lactate also functions as a signalling molecule. Researchers now recognise lactate as a regulator of: Gene expression, Mitochondrial adaptation, Cellular communication, Metabolic flexibility, and Lipid metabolism. This signalling role has led some scientists to describe lactate as a "lactormone"⁴.
